Smallhold Gives Customers the Chance to Grow Edible Mushroom Sculptures While Quarantined

When you’re done with puzzles and baking, it might be time to ask yourself whether you’re ready to fill some of that enforced downtime with something entirely new – and it doesn’t come much kookier than cultivating your own mushrooms. Enter New York City’s Smallhold, an independent mushroom producer based in Brooklyn. Previous to the Covid-19 pandemic, Smallhold’s business model worked on installing ‘minifarms’ inside restaurants, hotels, and grocery stores, allowing the likes of The Standard Hotel and Whole Foods to offer a specialist mushroom offering with a neat provenance attached.

With the closure of NYC’s customer-facing businesses, the company was forced to turn to the public to extend the appeal of its shrooms, offering home-grow kits for people to create their own edible mushroom sculptures for themselves. Created by Andrew Carter and Adam DeMartino, Smallhold offers starter kits for $34 each with a choice between four different types of mushroom. Check out the mushroom creations below.
