While most surfers would consider fleeing the freezing temperatures of winter for the tropics, Ryan Struck runs towards it with open arms. Over the years, his surfer side has braved the the glacial waves of his local Atlantic beaches during the wintertime; his photographer side has been documenting it. Titled Snow Surfers, Struck’s series revolves around the close-knit community partaking in the seemingly weather-displaced sport.
It’s the spirit of surfing that Struck hopes to highlight. “No matter what, surfers surf,” he says. Come blizzard or heavy snowfall, you can expect neoprene-suited surfers to trek valiantly through snow towards the ocean, because that’s just how they do it. “The Snow Surfers series shows the coldest highs a surfer from the East Coast experiences,” Struck enthuses. “The water is mind-numbing, quite literally after your first duck dive. I’ve definitely felt dazed shooting from the water after getting pounded by a big set, it really adds a different element to this pursuit of happiness.”
Struck works in New York as a photographer and director. Curious about the world and what surrounds us, he investigates global events, culture and people through a visual medium.
