While for many of us summer—and the sight of the beach—is quickly becoming a distant memory, these aerial shots of the beaches of Miami by photographer Antoine Rose will help take you back to the time you fell asleep reading, only to wake up sunburnt.
The Belgian photographer commenced working on his series “Up In The Air” in 2002, while he was shooting the Kitesurfing World Cup in Rio de Janeiro. The process and ideas have been refined over the years, though it still sounds harrowing, as Rose admits that “shooting from helicopters, all doors removed, 300 feet above earth at 20 knots and getting tack sharp images that can be printed as large as 120 inches is quite a challenge”.
His daredevil techniques are for the benefit of us, the audience—not only are Rose’s photos a perfect ode to the warmer months, they serve as a fascinating study of human patterns, as we’re offered a bird’s eye view of the nesting habits of that species of human known as “the beachgoer”. Each photograph blends a combination of haphazardness and uniformity that makes them unique — bring on next summer.
Up In The Air will be on display at the Emmanuel Fremin Gallery in New York from 15th November 2014 to 26th January 2015.
