A modern aesthetic, sustainability features and within the budget: the 2 Barns project by studio Koss Design+Build ticks all of these boxes. A new build in Phoenix’s Uptown area, 2 Barns is a contemporary take on barn-like forms that ties nicely with the family’s heritage and the agricultural history of the area.

The home is composed of two separate volumes connected by a glass walkway. Its cladding is made of 3d panels that a are design as rain screen elements, combined with wood siding to give it a more tactile feel. The materials and finishes used throughout were chosen not only for aesthetic purposes but also for their direct response to their maintenance and performance in delivering a net zero project, which was one of the main drivers of the home.

The master ensuite was delegated to one wing of the home, while the bigger volume hosts the social areas and a guest bedroom. A large, convivial patio protected overhead by a wood-slat roof extends the indoors towards the garden. Furnished with a combination of custom-made pieces, vintage finds and new furniture, 2 Barns is a thoughtful reflection on form and function.
