At a time when Spain was faltering under the bleak, nationalist reign of General Franco, photographer Ramon Masats began to document life in the country just as, despite its dictatorial regime, the welcome impact of tourism began to restore a sense of economic hope. Coinciding with the loosening of the Franco grip and Spain’s sense of increased openness, Masats arrived in Madrid from Catalonia during the mid-1950s and began to carve out his career as a photographer. 

A vital artist, Masats’ work offers a key voice on the Spanish struggle to reconnect with the world, his highly personal style capturing the human stories of an unknown Spain. The work of Ramon Masats is currently the focus of a new exhibition at Photo Espana, entitled Visit Spain, which runs until 10 December.
