Cortney Bishop Works Southern Cool Magic on Charleston’s Ryder Hotel

Right in the heart of Charleston, South Carolina’s Meeting Street is the newly-transformed Ryder Hotel, an upscale boutique hotel that exudes an energy matching that of the city. Completing the architectural work by Goff D’Antonio Associates, interior design firm Cortney Bishop Design worked magic on The Ryder’s interiors, orchestrating an atmosphere unafraid to play with contrasts: informal yet sophisticated, funky but mellow, contemporary with hints of retro.

Using a palette of warm earth tones, bold mosaics, light-stained woods and vibrant textiles, the hotel is a reflection of southern cool. Staying guests and locals are welcome to the inviting coffee shop on the ground floor, or to cozy up by the fireplace on the mezzanine level’s banquets and sofas upholstered in Bishop’s bespoke fabric collection, Harwood House. Adjacent to the lounge, the pool deck and courtyard asserts itself as the hotel’s focal point and social hub, irresistible with its funky-shaped pool, retro umbrellas, custom-designed DEDON daybeds and a lively tropical palm mural by Charleston-based Headspace Murals.

From the bustle of these public spaces, guests can retreat into one of the 91 guest rooms and suites that were carefully curated to emanate an ambiance of southern cool. Against the backdrop of nature-inspired hues, these spaces are accented by the works of long-time collaborators and new talents including furniture maker New Breed Furniture, artists Ron Royals and Katie Gong, and homeware artisan MM clay. Vibrant, luxurious fabrics and drapery by designers Christopher Faircloth, happy habitat, Moattar and Harwood House tie the entire room together — a cozy, relaxing cocoon to retreat to after a day of exploring Charleston.
