Located in Palo Alto, Art House is an added section of an original 1920s residence, which the owners use as a social space and a personal art gallery.

The project involved purchasing the adjacent land to the original property and adding new spaces within the compound, of which the Art House is the largest. California-based Buttrick Projects applied modern building techniques for this, with the exterior outfitted with UV-filtering glass openings that maximize natural light, while cementitious panels attached over metal hat channels reduce thermal transfer. Perforated zinc wraps around the second level, reducing heat gain.

Limestone green slowly blends into the greys and whites of the interior, the minimalist aesthetic taking a step back to highlight the residents’ expansive art collection. Wide, unencumbered doors open up the living and dining areas to the central courtyard, adding an organic backdrop to the art showcase inside. Throughout the house, strategically placed windows save the same purpose as well, making Art House a perfect blend of organic, creative, and modern sensibilities. Follow the studio on Instagram.
