Dotted around a sprawling hill amidst trees, natural hedges and wild grasses are 14 minimalist cabins that make up 48° Nord, an eco-centric hotel on the heights of the Alsatian village of Breitenbach in France. The project, led by Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter, is shaped by two cultures, French and Scandinavian, and is defined by its unique architectural expression, clean design, a spirit of well-being and its quest to engage its guests in an intimate and holistic experience with their natural surroundings.

Inspired by the traditional Scandinavian hytte – a small country house meant for retreat and reconnection – 48° Nord’s cabins subtly integrate into the landscape via wooden exteriors built from locally-sourced chestnut trees, interrupted only by large glass windows offering stunning panoramic views. Presented in four distinct topologies of varying heights and shapes, the cabins are raised from the ground on stilts, minimising their ecological footprint. The interiors, minimal and rustic, perfectly embody the cozy and comfortable ambiance that define the Nordic concept of hygge. 

Besides welcoming guests, the site’s main building also includes a wellness center and restaurant, serving food made from locally-sourced organic produce and the hotel’s very own vegetable garden.

“At 48° Nord, luxury is redefined,” the studio remarks. “Alone, facing the landscape, guests are enabled to find another essence of beauty and comfort in the shifting colors fo the season, lights and shadows; the very essence of nature’s qualities.”
