An outdated commercial building in Karuizawa, Japan was given a refreshing overhaul by the architecture practice Yuji Tanabe Architects, replacing the former restaurant with a contemporary workspace called Work x Ation. 

Tanabe retained the structure’s V-shaped footprint, opting instead to make major changes in the interiors by eliminating previously put-up partitions and improving the building’s insulation and ventilation systems. Comprised of two wings – one a single level and the other double – the studio designed the ground floor as an open workspace, along with designated break areas and a terrace-fronted café. The single-level structure is flanked with generous windows, framing the calming scene of birch trees to one side and a quiet interior courtyard on the other. The cedar wood exteriors were painted a sober grey, assuming a subtle, unobtrusive presence in the neighborhood. On a side note, the studio added a small seating and lounge area topped with a playful, slanting timber roof, a perfect nook for contemplation among the trees.
