Graphic artist and illustrator Vlad Tretiak takes us around his hometown of Kemerovo, Russia in his two-part series A Small Town in Siberia. Shot from 2013 to 2017 during what is certainly extremely cold weather, Tretiak’s photography almost always includes cars and urban landscapes — subjects he has a certain fondness for, we realize, upon browsing his previous projects.  

Tretiak used an Olympus OM-10 for this series, choosing to shoot in analog for its raw, unpredictable results. While the daytime yields flat gray landscapes, the evening’s streetlights and neon signs allow him more room to play around creatively in terms of color, contrast and composition. Unsurprisingly, there are hardly any people in the streets during these nighttime promenades, producing a melancholic and cinematic atmosphere.
