Graceful forms of bodies in mid-dance are captured by Italian artist and photographer Alessandra D’Innella in her series Unnatural State, inspired by Butoh dance as well as German philosopher Erich Fromm’s concept of man’s permanent separation from nature once torn away from it. Built on a dialogue between herself and the performers, D’Innella reflects on human condition in relation with the environment. Her subjects always appear to be falling into each scene, and whether we perceive this is as a return or departure to nature is purely subjective.
D’Innella’s work delves into the creative process, and how cultural identity, memories and influences can affect and transform perceptions. “My prcctice explore show these notions can be visually translated into a work of art that echoes a place or a visual aesthetic, triggering imagination, desire and escapism,” she states.
