Based in both Stockholm and Paris, Swedish design studio Tomorrow Machine elevates packaging to an excitingly futuristic, sustainable level. These innovative food packaging solutions are cooked up by product designers Hanna Billqvist and Anna Glansén, who met during their years at Beckman’s College of Design in Stockholm. Together they form Tomorrow Machine, uniting research, new technologies and intelligent material towards building a better world.
Their project This Too Shall Pass is the perfect example of how the duo manage to breathe excitement into something as overlooked as food packaging. These three examples are as engaging as they are sustainable:
Made from biodegradable wax, Tomorrow Machine proposes this conical packaging to store dry goods such as grains and rice. It’s meant to be opened as one peels an orange.
While it looks like you’re cracking open an egg to let out oil-based food, this innovative material is actually made from caramelized sugar and coated in wax, making it melt once put in water.
Pry open the top of this smoothie packaging and be amazed as the package withers at the same rate as its contents! Made only from the gel of agar-agar and water, this amazing smoothie packaging is as amusing as it is clever. Made primarily for refrigerated drinks with a short life span (fresh juice, smoothies or fresh cream).
