A former motel dating back to the 1940s has been transformed into The Green Room Hotel, a bungalow-style boutique hotel along iconic Coast Highway in Southern California.
Close to the beach and Michelin Star restaurants, co-owners Stephen and Brett Poovey were charmed by the hotel’s history and its location. With the help of local designers Jessica Tingle and Leigh Jendrusina, the bungalow was refurbished with a mix of modern design features and retro elements to imbue that beloved laid-back, California-cool vibe.
The interiors are a nod to the surf and sound subcultures of Southern California. Mid-century furniture, retro-style appliances, playful tiling, bohemian accents, and custom art from local artists are artfully displayed across the twelve rooms. Several of the one- and two-bedroom suites and studio accommodations come with kitchenettes or private patios with outdoor seating, appealing to travellers looking for short staycations and extended stays.
With the beach a mere 10-minute walk from the property, The Green Room Hotel offers grab-and-go surfboards and beach cruisers. After invigorating surf sessions, guests can mingle around the hotel’s social spaces, including a cedar-style hot tub, a fire pit, and an outdoor area with communal picnic tables. The hotel also collaborates with local businesses to establish a sense of community spirit, partnering with local bakeries for complimentary morning coffee and pastries during the weekends, or with Catch Surf and SoCal Bike for leisure activities.
