A Compact Palo Alto Home with a Large Presence

Tasked with creating a new ground-up residence for a young family of five, Studio VARA faced the challenge of making the most of the small corner lot in Old Palo Alto while maintaining a generous program.

What transpired was a Rubik’s Cube-like house with interconnected spaces that expand outward into a landscape of intimate but spacious outdoor rooms. Studio VARA created three stacked volumes that shift and recede from sight as they move up to counter the massing and achieve a lightness to the structure. Thoughtful window placement and uninterrupted floor-to-ceiling glass walls maximize natural light and sightlines.

Levels are defined by a distinct material: concrete for the basement, wood for the main level, and dark zinc for the top floor. The main level, slightly elevated, funnels light into the basement through deep light wells. Sumptuous interiors, elegant cabinetry, and a sculptural steel stair unify the three levels. Upstairs, the master suite and bedrooms ensure privacy and scenic views. By seamlessly integrating architecture, interiors, furnishings, and landscaping, Studio VARA delivers a cohesive, luxurious family home.
