Hailing from Tuscany, photographer Matteo Verre works on projects that reflect on themes of identity, relationships, the passing of time and the emotions attached to them.
His ongoing project, Stop Making Sense, is a visual exploration of our human need to seek meaning in our surroundings. The self-portrait series presents Verre against a plain backdrop, his face covered in foil, wrapped in bandages, or hidden by a toilet seat cover. And while initial reactions would be to dismiss it as senseless, the images ignite a surge of curiosity in his viewers, making us wonder about the meaning behind it.
And that’s exactly where Verre wants us: somewhere between hilarity and solemnity, uncertainty and assurance. “The more you dig deeper trying to find a sense in the world around you and the world within you, the more you find out that maybe there’s no sense, in the universal way in which it was intended,” says Verre.
