When you leave behind the idea that furniture must mimic a preconceived notion of comfort, you open yourself up to a world of intriguing interior design that might previously have eluded you. This is the way we look at the work of Swedish-Iraqi designer Sizar Alexis, whose super desirable work is sculptural, challenging, and perhaps a touch medieval.
Soft edges and smooth curves have no place in the geometric, characterful shapes that call to mind the bold lines and edges of Brutalist design. His angular works push the use of irregular and imperfect finishes, with materials chosen to celebrate the rich architectural heritage of ancient Mesopotamia. Alexis’ collection of candle sticks, desks, coffee tables, and chairs share his signature strong shapes and come bearing the resemblance of the Brutalist buildings that inspire him.
