Before filters were available at the swipe of a phone screen, the lo-fi haze of carefully composed photographs came from a more analogue place. In his series, entitled Instamatic, legendary photographer Todd Hido lets the focus slip as he composes a set of beautifully softened images that eschew crisp lines for the blurred beauty of lo-fi resolution.
From shooting homes at night to capturing unassuming, everyday landscapes, Hido’s photography is a labor of intensifying the familiar and creating emotion, memory, and art in the scenes we take for granted. Hido has released multiple monographs of his work and his photos feature in the permanent collections of institutions including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian, the Getty, the Whitney Museum of Art, and the Guggenheim Museum.
