We usually associate picky eating with toddlers and children. Yet eating habits actually carry on to adulthood, albeit in a slightly less disruptive and obnoxious manner – a subject Colombian food stylist and photographer Paola Sanchez explores in her entertaining series Falta de Juete, or Spoiled Kids.
The project calls for two images laid side by side: on the left, a photo of the ‘spoiled kid’; on the right, a visual narrative of their quirky eating habits. Her subjects, professionals in different creative fields, cagingly reveal their food oddities. Among them: a photographer who peels the chocolate sides off a Snickers bar to get to the caramel part, a food stylist who eats fries from the shortest to longest, or a fashion designer who’ll eat fruit… but only in even numbers. It’s a fascinating look at how people navigate their relationship with food time, transforming eyebrow-raising mannerisms into something endearing.
When she isn’t busy unearthing people’s weird eating habits, Sanchez runs Crudo with her two partners, photographer Andres Caicedo and food stylist Natalia Londono. Crudo is a food design and photography studio that reinterprets the aesthetics of ingredients, recipes and food itself.
