A collaboration between architect Murray Barker and artist Laith McGregor, Monoliths is composed of two outdoor table tennis tables whose heavy, sculptural form blends in perfectly in any urban environment.
The idea was hatched over conversations about social games in public spaces in Europe and Australia between the two creatives. Made of concrete and stone aggregate, the tables could very well pass off as monuments, if not for their steel nets and subtle copper regulatory line markings typical of a ping pong table.
The first table, named OK Point, is set on a pyramid-shaped base, while the Step-up KO table is a darker version of the latter with an inverted stair-shaped base, as well as an indented section meant to hold players’ beers. Presented together, the friendly structures of Monoliths become a hub of activity, encouraging interaction in public spaces.
