Mesmerizing Leaf Sculptures by Susanna Bauer

The beautiful crocheted leaves of Susanna Bauer are a fitting way to welcome the autumn season. Bauer carefully stitches magnolia leaves into mini-sculptures, manipulating the fragile medium into cubes, spheres and other geometric patterns. The results are mesmerizing, as is her ability to work with such intense precision and care.

The leaves she uses are preserved and dried for several weeks before she actually starts shaping them – a common technique used by botanists. The German-born artist states that there lies a fine balance between fragility and strength in her work; her art reveals “the tenderness and tension in human connections, the transient yet enduring beauty of nature that can be found in the smallest detail, vulnerability and resilience that could be transferred to nature as a whole of the stories of individual beings.”
