Photographer Marietta Varga draws out the playful aesthetics of imposing Brutalist architecture in her series Raw Hill. Often described as functional, massive, and austere, these post-World War II structures have long been associated with political trends and the negative spirit of a past era. “I hope that that through my series I can change this point of view somewhat and others find the uniqueness of this style that has grabbed my attention and imagination,” says Varga.

Quirky without being cutesy, Varga’s subjects — a pastel-clad couple — mimic the symmetry of the background. Despite their stiff poses and serious expressions they bring a cheerfulness to each shot, highlighting instead of overpowering the Brutalist buildings behind them.
