Studio Littow Architectes has completed a trio of prefabricated housing units along the Helsinki archipelago’s coastline. These prefabricated cabins, collectively called Majamaja Village, offer an off-the-grid destination for both adventure and retreat seekers, being that access to transportation and public utilities are next to none.
The cabin components were prefabricated off-site before being transported and assembled at their final location. Each dwelling is organized around a “patented autonomous sanitary-kitchen module” that integrates both energy storage and wastewater treatment systems.
Compact and utilizing every inch of space, the cabins feature multipurpose furniture that can be folded away when not in use. Interior surfaces combine dark and light wood, creating a dramatic yet understated aesthetic that maintains focus on the panoramic water views.
By reducing its environmental footprint by up to 80 percent, the project shows its commitment to sustainable building practices in remote areas, foregoing the environmental hazards that often come with on-site construction. “After this pilot village, Majamaja plans to expand its evolving concept to other sensitive or challenging environments,” says Littow Architectes.
