Interior and Exterior Blur in the Stoic Wall Residence

Located in Kadirur, Kerala, the brilliant Stoic Wall Residence by Lijo Reny Architects blurs elements of vernacular architecture with contemporary style to deliver a residence that responds to the environment. A seamless fusion of indoor and outdoor living, designed to complement the region’s vibrant tropical climate, the home blurs its boundaries with loosely defined spaces of uncovered courtyards, with landscaped outside pockets integrated into the house, transforming the atmosphere.

While large – it is spread across 7,317 square feet – the home is at one with its surroundings, built to complement the contours of the landscape and its lush vegetation with its undulating, barrel-like roof softening its presence. At the center of the home, an open family living area opens to a variety of landscaped courtyards, with slatted walls ventilating the space. A tropical modernist style home that is both functional, contemporary, and overtly stylish in places, the Stoic Residence is a mixture molded by its location. This adherence to the land is witnessed in its three-level structure, which was designed to follow a gentle slope to avoid disturbing the ground during construction any more than necessary. Materials include the heavy use of concrete, teak, terracotta, and laterite, each element adding its own pizazz to the meticulously curated interiors of the harmonious home.
