Have you ever felt as if you were disappearing, limb by limb? Lee Materazzi visualizes that sensation in her photography, which teems with dark humor and melancholic undertones.
Surreal and cheeky, Materazzi’s subjects find themselves in uncomfortable positions: entangled in electronic appliances, trapped in closets, asphyxiating into Cheerio-filled tupperware or plastic wrap. Themes of domesticity reign in her work, often taking place in bedrooms, kitchens or yards. Though humorous, there is something about the staged photographs that make us reflect on conventionality, fulfillment and failure.
