Overlooking the breathtaking vistas of the British Columbia coastline stands the Writer’s Retreat Cabin, a quaint wooden studio crafted by Vancouver-based firm Laura Killam Architecture. Tailored for a writer’s solitary creative endeavours away from the main multi-generational residence on the property, this cabin epitomizes the essence of a rustic sanctuary, with its modest footprint divided into two volumes housing the private and public programs. Its distinctive profile, mirroring the slant of its cedar-tiled roof, is gently angled to shield it from the occasional storms that sweep through the region.
Wrapping the grey cedar-clad cabin exterior is an expansive L-shaped deck, serving as a gracious entry point. Inside, a meticulously curated interior unfolds, boasting an open and airy layout that invites sweeping views of the ocean. Tucked away behind the social spaces lie a cozy bedroom and bath, bathed in natural light streaming through skylights.
Clear western red cedar wood and Douglas Fir take center stage in the interiors, adorning the walls, siding, window trimmings, and floors, imbuing the space with a sense of warmth and charm. Together, these elements converge to create a timeless and inspiring retreat, where tranquility meets creativity amidst the beauty of the coastal landscape.
