Built in 1928 by architect Arata Endo – an early disciple of Fran Lloyd Wright – the Hayama Kachi House has stood in its original state for close to 100 years in its leafy location in a Tokyo suburb. Having stood the test of time so well, the time eventually arrived for the culturally significant property to undergo a renovation to preserve its value for the next century.
The project to transform the building was led by Kamiya Architects, whose clients gave them a brief to create a modern, boutique hotel that retained the historical heritage appeal of the building’s original bones. What Kamiya Architects have delivered is a beautifully finished, luxurious space that retains the Frank Lloyd Wright influences in the form of its prairie villa sensibilities. The property is layered over a number of levels, each shielded, hidden, and enhanced by the forested surroundings of the lush natural environment.
