Innocad Architecture designed Casa S, a striking family home in Salzburg, Austria that balances introversion and extroversion with one distinctive feature: an upper floor that seemingly floats above an open ground floor. From the outside, the home looks like two different residences with its wooden volume set on an all-glass base. The gabled roof extends over the pre-weathered facade at the rear of the home, creating shade for an outdoor terrace.
Inside, the kitchen and fireplace are sculptural focal points around which the rest of the social spaces revolve. Calming palettes of wood and stone in earthy tones clothe the interiors, emphasizing connections to the greenery around the property. Sloping ceilings feature prominently on the second level, contributing to the bright and spacious volumes.
Casa S wears two faces. When closed, the dark, pre-weathered upper wooden portion transforms the home from transparent to fortress-like. This dual personality allows the family to control their relationship with the neighborhood while maintaining strong connections to their garden and nature.
