Inès Bressand is a French designer whose work is intricately linked to the unique artistry of craftsmen around the world. Close collaborations with these artisans allow her a fresh outlook and approach to her creations. Taking their traditional methods to the next level, she injects her own contemporary touch to each piece. The Akamae collection is a perfect example of this creative cross-fertilisation process: Weavers from Ghana braided straw into simple geometric forms, which Bressand then sculpted and shaped into bags upon her return to France. The results are wonderful sculptural pieces that celebrate the artisanal efforts of creative minds and hands located halfway across the world from each other.
Her straw basket collections were selected for the 2018 Festival of Hyères’ Accessories Prize. Bressand is based in Marseille, France, and regularly travels to Africa as a freelance designer. See more of her wonderful work on her website, and follow her on Instagram.
