You’ll never look at jeans the same way after you’ve discovered the art of Ian Berry. The British contemporary artist is known for his use of different-hued denim patches to create staggering, layered artworks that resemble oil paintings. Often portraying scenes tinged with melancholia – a theme that goes undeniably well with the blue and indigo tones of the material – Berry’s tableaus take place in laundromats, empty bars, or in the intimacy of one’s bedroom, Hockney-esque in tone and aesthetic. Various depths and tones are achieved through the meticulous layering of denim swatches of varying washes and fades.
From a pile of old jeans, a pair of scissors and glue, Berry found a unique foothold in the art world. Through his craft, the common urban material is elevated to a work of art that instantly creates a familiar connection with his audience.
