Mexican architecture studio Workshop renovated the Huolpoch House, an old Yucatecan house dating back to the end of the last century into a calming residential oasis. Its traditional pastel-colored façade belies the modern and casual ambiance of the home’s interiors, which brings three cultures together: local greenery, artworks by Fernando Andriacci, Neil Caron and Pedro Friedberg and wooden furniture from Mozambique, tokens from the Dutch owners’ sojourn in southeast Africa.
The central courtyard features a chukum pool, its refreshing green waters contained by stone vestiges of the old colonial structure and shaded by a large poplar tree. An outdoor kitchen contributes to the indoor-outdoor lifestyle so typical in the region, and cements the courtyard as the social heart of the home. At the end of the courtyard, a two-storey volume houses the bedrooms, whose terraces and balconies overlook the pool and tropical gardens. Speaking more about the project, Workshop says, “Huolpoch House seeks to respect and rescue the historical values of Yucatecan colonial architecture, combining them with contemporary volumes and details.” In a pure and sober way, the home brings worldly influences together within a comfortable, familial atmosphere.
Workshop has also designed the smaller but just as charming Hannah House in Yucatan. Follow them on Instagram.
