In the seaside region of Lagonisi some 30 kilometres away from Athens, it’s hard not to wax poetic over this breathtaking residence built by Greek studio Mado Samiou Architects for a private client. Monolithic yet seemingly fragile against the arid landscape, the structure emerges from the ground angled at 6°, literally living up to its name.
House 6° visually asserts its presence via contradictory factors – a heaviness in volume, and a lightness of its radiant white body against the bright blue sky. Two large openings break the solidity of the home, framing the landscape while shielding its inhabitants from strong winds and sun. The private and common areas reveal themselves in two layers: the bedrooms are burrowed into the earth to indicate a closeness with nature, while ascending past the kitchen leads to the elevated living area which opens up to a spectacular panorama. Skylights pierce the ceilings of each space, bathing the rooms in varying degrees of sunlight throughout the day.
“House 6° is a minimalist manifestation,” the studio explains. “As a reaction against noise and vulgarity, each space embodies the need for serenity, clarity, silence. Through simplicity and purity, an almost temple-like home is created.”
