Lost in the middle of the lush vegetation and landscapes of San Bernardino, the Hillside House is an oasis of calm and quiet a mere 45 minute drive from the bustling city of Asuncion, Paraguay.

Local architecture practice Bauen designed the home on a hillside, its inclination offering its habitants an unparalleled view of nature and the nearby lake. Distributed on three levels, all the spaces at the Hillside House direct one’s sight towards the horizon. The top two floors feature the bedrooms and bathrooms, while the ground floor hosts an airy, glass-covered social area with access to a stunning swimming pool, complete with a waterfall feature. Metal bars and raw concrete walls protrude over selected areas around the house, creating patches of shade and intimate terraces that give this beautiful home such intriguing character. As the studio so aptly put it: “The respect for the place is the premise, where the vegetation dominates and defines the architecture. We can’t compete with the perfection and beauty of nature; we can only frame and contemplate it.”
