The design of a modern house often seeks to blend seamlessly with its environment, which is precisely what studio Gurea Arquitectura Cooperativa set out to accomplish with their project, the Navajeda Wooden House. Enveloped within the natural landscape of Spain’s Cantabria region, the house exudes a contemporary aesthetic despite its deceivingly simple and compact exterior. The façades, adorned with cork panels and wood, establish a harmonious dialogue with the surrounding trees and meadows, while a corrugated sheet metal roof adds to its distinct character, mirroring the atmospheric changes of the Cantabrian sky. 

Two distinct volumes form the residence, separated by a centrally placed winter garden. This central garden also doubles as a greenhouse during the bulk of the year, distributing warm air throughout the home. The kitchen connects these volumes, creating an H-shaped living area that optimizes both space and functionality. Like its exterior, a raw and honest materials palette lines the indoor walls and ceilings of the double-height living area, the cozy mezzanine, and the private quarters.

The prefabricated pieces were assembled on-location in just one week, an approach that not only streamlined the process but also emphasized an efficient and innovative way of home building; a shining example of how landing one’s dream home needn’t be so complicated.
