While a vast majority would prefer their home extensions seamless and discreet, there are some like Bureau de Change who opt for the opposite and dare to take the unconventional route.
The London-based design studio apply a sense of theatre, playfulness and innovation to the rear extension and refurbishment of the Frame House, a South London Victorian terraced dwelling, through a series of staggered and interlocked glass volumes that extrude in different directions, providing unique views of the quaint garden and patio while letting natural light into the space.
“Moving down through the space from the kitchen at the front, views of the extension reveal themselves through a journey of discovery — the space is not in one glance,” the studio says. “This slowing-down allows for surprise, intimacy and drama.”
The living area features a series of tiered planes, creating levels that delineate spaces and their functions. A new master and guest suite were also built on the second floor. Though much more subdued than the living area, the newly-renovated spaces are linked by the use of terrazzo.
