Finnish photographer and visual artist Kimmo Metsaranta celebrates unnoticed architectural structures in his series Notes on a Place, challenging the general consensus of what we deem worth seeing.
Often stopped by tourists for directions to popular attractions close to his workplace, Metsaranta decided to get a fresh perspective on his immediate surroundings, particularly the mundane and overlooked corners of the neighborhood. Giving his photographs a more abstract approach, he digitally places the buildings against pale pastel backgrounds to detach them from their normal surroundings and put them in the spotlight. Notes on a Place endeavours to take hold of one’s surroundings, to truly see and not merely look, inviting us to do the same in the process.
Based in Helsinki, Metsaranta’s artistic and commercial work has been featured in numerous publications and exhibitions locally and worldwide. More on www.kimmometsaranta.com and follow him on Instagram.
