When it comes to the photography of Ben Zank, we literally and figuratively never really get the entire picture at once. And that’s actually a good thing. Often gravitating towards the zany and unexpected, his visual narratives generate a monumental buzz for his use of tongue-in-cheek humor and surreal compositions.
Primarily working with portraiture, Zank conceals his subjects behind palm fronds or bales of hay; he positions them face-down against rocks or burrows their heads underneath their t-shirts. Emotion is conveyed entirely through body language, leaving us to decipher the obscure references and hidden meanings – if there are any at all.
