Captivating Portraiture by Ivana Besevic

Serbian painter and illustrator Ivana Besevic creates colorful and captivating portraits that are inspired by a myriad of things: unconventional stories, drama, cinema and photography. The artist, who studied in Belgrade and Paris, specializes in portraiture and figurative art. She experiments with various styles, techniques and media, and is perfectly comfortable in both traditional and digital painting.

Broad paint strokes, used for her backgrounds, taper into more precise and detailed ones, producing a mix of realistic and conceptual styles in one tableau. But her paintings are so much more than technique: it’s all about emotion, as the penetrating gazes and expressive features of her subjects convey. “I like to paint a beautiful face or landscape, but if it’s just beautiful aesthetically, the experience is not good enough,” she explains in an interview. “It has to be underlined with something psychological, fearful, dramatic, dangerous. I am interested in the unconventional and outstanding.” More on her website and Instagram.
