Steeped in suggestiveness and intrigue, the work of visual artist Bartholot is a play of contradictions. Surreal and disturbing undertones bubble beneath clean and orderly compositions, leaving his audience slightly uncomfortable, but captivated nevertheless.
Describing his work as ‘staged, sculptural and graphic’, the artist attaches no particular message or meaning to his works, preferring his viewers to come up with their own conclusions. Always accompanied by an element of surprise, his carefully crafted tableaus are refreshing explorations of different textures, colors and aesthetics, resulting in minimalistic and stylized imagery that keeps us on our toes.
Bartholot discovered photography while working under Spanish photographer Alvaro Villarrubia in Madrid, an experience that inspired him to move back to Berlin in 2009 to establish his one-man studio. Enjoy the selection of images below, and discover more on his website and Instagram.
