Montreal-based architectural firm Atelier Barda takes on a renovation project in the town’s Little Italy district, reinventing a mixed-use building where the interior and exterior seems to tell two different stories.
Save for a few minor tweaks, the exterior of Residence Alma was preserved, its traditional brick wall façade kept as a reminder of the area’s rich heritage. A portion of the commercial space was dedicated to a new garage and entry space, its distinct black doors adding a bit of modern to the vintage.
The interior, on the other hand, was rebuilt from scratch. Designed stunningly in black and white, the elegant hallways are distinctly modern, from the sleek black kitchen counters and cabinetry, to the oiled oak hardwood floors, to the glass-enclosed private courtyard that features a meditative garden with a Japanese soaking tub.
Perhaps rather than two different stories, the inside and the outside of the home is more of a storytelling aesthetic, showcasing the architect’s transformative approach from vintage to luxurious.
