An existing 1960’s mid-century home in Studio City, California gets a remodel and extension by Los Angeles-based design practice Assembledge+.

Set on a lush landscape in proximity to Fryman Canyon and Laurel Canyon, Oakdell Residence is defined by its original saw-tooth floor plan that the clients wished to keep. Though offering views from multiple directions, the floor plan was congested and limited the space’s connectivity. The studio transformed it into an airy light-filled volume, achieved by maximising the presence of glass walls, sliding doors, windows and skylights, all contributing to a heightened sense of transparency throughout the home and visually connecting the interiors to the outdoors. 

The home opens up to a large living, dining and kitchen area, and a bar and game room. A two-step descent leads to an additional family room that segues into the newly-added two-storey building embedded into the hillside, with bedrooms on the main floor and office space on the lower one. The saw-tooth layout and large roof overhangs produce a variety of exterior spaces across the tiered landscape, ranging from outdoor patios to gardens, and an outdoor swimming pool. A material palette of stone, hardwood floor and white plaster emphasise Oakdell Residence’s mid-century charm.
