In an old quarter of Beijing, a dilapidated siheyuan – a traditional Chinese residence of pitched-roof buildings and interior courtyards – received a stunning renovation by design firm Archstudio. The Chinese studio wanted to retain its original architectural bones and preserve its traditional aesthetic while bringing a touch of contemporary to its interiors.

The cluster of seven small pitched-roof buildings are linked together by a veranda, allowing residents to meander through the different parts of the home while offering a playful walking experience with fantastic views. The gateways and etched carvings on arched door openings exude their old world character. The main hub of the home takes place in the middle courtyard, where one finds the living room, tea room, dining room and kitchen. Glass-fronted hallways lead towards two bedrooms, a tea room and a study. With combinations of furniture crafted from old and new wood, the Qishe Courtyard is a dwelling that’s firmly rooted in the past while looking brightly towards the future.
