Australian architect Marshall Blecher and Studio Fokstrot’s Magnus Maarbjerg have created a project that is ambitious, smart and whimsical all at once: the Copenhagen Islands. The duo foresee an fleet of wooden islands that float around the Copenhagen waterways, bringing back the life and activity to the former industrial harbourside.

Their first prototype is a 20 square-meter floating platform which comes with its own linden tree (if that doesn’t catch your attention, we don’t know what will). The handcrafted island, which is now located in Copenhagen’s Slusen, has become quite popular as a floating public space, already used was a resting place for kayakers, swimmers, sunbathers, and as a venue for small events. The long-term goal is to create a series platforms that can be combined together according to function. They’ve envisaged nine platforms all in all, serving as saunas, floating gardens, floating mussel farms, and diving platforms. And hopefully, in the future, these floating islands could be adapted by other cities as well.
