Though inspired by traditional construction methods of the area, the Bucina Cottage cuts a strikingly contemporary figure in the ski resort village of Mala Upa in the Czech Republic.
Architecture office ADR designed the dwelling as the residence of a ski resort manager with an aim to keep it compact and functional. Its distinctive cross-shaped layout divides areas by function, each arm dotted with generous windows to create a constant connection with nature. A spiral staircase sits at the intersection of these volumes, winding around a chimney, undoubtedly the heart of this cozy abode.
The lightweight wooden structure stands on a raised concrete foundation, the elevation allowing it to adapt to the changing terrain. Just like the traditional mountain buildings, the facades are clad in spruce boards and coated in red paint. The use of wood continues indoors, lining the floors, ceilings, and walls. The rustic charm is balanced by colourful furniture pieces, creating the perfect blend of tradition and contemporary design.
